Returning to the Father

Receiving mercy and extending it to others

Read Luke 15:11–32. Pay attention to both sons and to the father’s response to each of them.

Understand the context

Jesus tells this parable in a chapter responding to criticism that He welcomes sinners. The younger son returns after wasting his inheritance. The father welcomes him with compassion. The older son struggles to share the father’s joy.

Reflect

Which son’s response is easiest for you to recognise in yourself? What does the father’s welcome teach you about repentance and mercy? Is there someone whose restoration you find difficult to celebrate?

Put faith into practice

Bring one failure honestly to God. Take a practical step to repair harm where possible. Offer another person the patience you hope to receive.

Pray

Father, help me return to You honestly and receive Your mercy. Free me from pride and resentment, and teach me to rejoice when others find their way home. Amen.
